Chapter activities this summer vacation

July: Beach Day, Canoe Trip and Family Outing is a four day, three night campout for Tourette families, or one parent and TS child and siblings or friends. It is usually Thursday to Sunday. The site is a group camp 2-3 miles north of Kensington Park, Milford, Michigan. It is only 25 minutes from Novi Road and I-96, close enough to the Detroit area that one parent may camp with the kids while the other parent commutes to work and then rejoins the family for the evening.

Each family is responsible for their own gear and equipment, and groceries, but there is always a lot of sharing. The campground is large and wooded with spacious camp sites on or near the Huron River. Bring fishing poles and floatables (air mattresses or water toys) for recreation in camp.

Now the bad news. This beautiful campground is rustic camping at its best. There is no electricity, hot water or flush facilities. The kids love it and we spend enough time in the water each day that we hardly miss the showers, until we get home. There is a camping site fee. There are hot showers available during the day in Kensington Park. We plan all day at the beach in Kensington Park ($4 per family) on Friday. We pack cooler lunches, hit the beach by 10:30 and don't get back to camp until the kids are tanned or totally pruned.

Saturday is canoeing. Again, we pack cooler lunches for the day and drive 20 miles upstream to a canoe livery north of Wixom. We then canoe downstream, back to our campground (4-5 hours and $27 per canoe).

Due to the proximity of Kensington and the canoe trip, non-camping families may join us for the day at the beach on Friday or the canoeing on Saturday as day trips with their kids. We just have to know who's coming and agree on meeting points and times. So, R.S.V.P.s are a must. Tentative date: July 19-23.

August: Family picnic at Four Bears Waterpark. For over ten years Tourette families have gathered at area parks to enjoy and old fashioned family picnic. For the past three years the management at Four Bears Waterpark has declared the second or third Sunday in August as Tourette Syndrome Day. All Tourette families in Michigan are invited to enjoy the park, with complementary admission. They also provide a large tent, with picnic tables. All families bring their own picnic meal or something to barbecue on the grill. This year, contingent on approval, we are planning a pig roast, possibly a Hawaiian luau theme. One of our TS families, Jerry and Cheryl Serra, are Serra Catering in Clinton Township. Not only does Jerry have a portable spit-roaster large enough to do an entire pig, complete with apple, he's even donating the pig. If we can make arrangements with Four Bears, our picnic will become a luau and families will be asked to bring a dish to pass, salads, fruit plates, etc. Tentative date: August 13. Rain date August 20.

P.S.: If you like planning, the committee could use a hand. Call 248-577-0872.
